Pilates Teacher Training Program
Functional Strength Pilates’ Teacher Training Program is a year-long program designed not only to familiarize the student with the beginning, intermediate and advanced level exercises in the classical Pilates repertoire, but also to ensure that each student who graduates from the program has an extensive background in both anatomy and in the building blocks of movement. The core of the Program is 4 weekend-long workshops structured to teach the Trainee first anatomy and movement, and then the Pilates repertoire.
With this goal in mind, each Functional Strength Trainee class begins with a weekend long Anatomy Workshop and is followed by a second Workshop Weekend focusing on the Foundational Movements in Pilates. After studying both anatomy and how and why the body moves as it does, the Trainee has a solid foundation from which to learn the entire Pilates repertoire. Without such a foundation, Trainees are often overwhelmed by the number of different exercises on all the different pieces of Pilates equipment.
Shortly after Trainees have had time to digest and work with the information they were exposed to in the Anatomy and Foundational Movements Workshop Weekends, the Trainees will attend two more weekend-long Workshops in which all of the classical Pilates exercises will be taught. The Repertoire Weekends will cover mat, reformer, cadillac, and chair exercises, as well as exercises on other Pilates accessories such as the foot corrector and the spine corrector.
With this approach, you’ll not only learn the choreography of all the exercises in the classical repertoire, but you will also learn the science behind the work and gain an in-depth anatomy based understanding of why Pilates can be so beneficial. Once out of the Program, this will enable you to teach both general and special populations. Click to download an application.
The Requirements
The 4 Workshop Weekends are offered twice-a-year and each Trainee is encouraged to attend all 8 weekends (96 hours) during their Program year. In addition to the Workshop Weekends, the Functional Strength Trainee is required to log a total of 915 apprenticeship hours including:
Finally, the Trainee will have written and performance based tests including:
During the Trainee’s Program year, he/she will be paired with a Mentor. This Mentor will meet quarterly with the Trainee (for a total of 6 hours) to ensure that he/she is meeting the goals of the program. The Mentor will also be available outside of these quarterly meetings to answer any questions the Trainee might have about the Program or the work. The Trainee will also have access to Trainee-specific classes that will, throughout the year, breakdown common questions and pitfalls.

Our Background:
All of the instructors at Functional Strength began their Pilates teaching careers by completing the Teacher Training Program at The Pilates Center in Boulder, CO. After completing this training, many Functional Strength instructors explored the teaching of other Pilates lineages and incorporated what they learned into their own personal philosophy.
Functional Strength instructors have over 30 years combined teaching experience. In addition to teaching general clients, the Functional Strength staff is experienced in teaching Pilates Teacher Trainees and has not only hands-on teaching experience but lecture experience as well. Before becoming Pilates instructors, our staff were teachers, lawyers, dancers, and sales people. Some of our staff still maintain their career in the corporate world while pursuing their passion for Pilates instruction.
In addition to working with the general population, we work closely with area Physical Therapists, Orthopedic doctors, Chiropractors, and other movement experts in order to provide Pilates instruction to a special population of clients who are rehabilitating a specific physical condition. We commonly work with clients with scoliosis, general disk issues or stenosis, joint pain or recovery after joint replacement, neuromuscular conditions, spinal fusion, whiplash, closed head injury, as well as other physical maladies.
With our varied backgrounds and in-depth experience we have a compassionate and open-minded staff that is looking forward to leading you through the year-long program so that you can help others achieve their health and fitness goals.
